Why Won’t My Washer Spin?

If you’ve found yourself with a washer that won’t spin, it might be due to various reasons. Here are the top parts that might be the culprit of why your washing machine is not spinning.

Direct Drive Coupling (Whirlpool/ Kenmore/ Roper/ Estate)

Many Whirlpool/Kenmore brand washing machines have a small, inexpensive direct drive motor coupling. It’s plastic and rubber and it can wear out over time, or fail under overloading conditions. This part protects your transmission from excessive loading.

Clutch (Whirlpool/ Kenmore)
The clutch connects the transmission to the inner tub. It allows the tub to spin properly. If the clutch is slipping or worn out, it must be replaced.

Water Level Switch
If the water level switch is not resetting once the water has drained, power will not be available to operate the motor during spin. Check the water level switch for proper operation.

Drive Belt
The drive belt is a long band that connects the drive motor pulley to the transmission drive pulley. The motor moves the belt, and the belt turns the transmission pulley for the agitation and spin cycles. The belt may become loose on the pulleys, which makes it hard for the tub to spin. If you can see that the belt is worn, replace it.

Control Board
The control board provides power to the motor, so if it’s faulty, the washing machine may not spin or may not work at all.

Drive Block
The drive block connects the inner tub to the transmission. If it wears out, the tub may not spin and will make a loud noise. The drive block is fairly easy to replace.

Transmission
The transmission connects the motor to the agitator and makes it agitate. Older Whirlpool washers utilize a transmission with an electro-mechanical shifter. If the shifter becomes defective the unit may drain the water but will not spin or agitate. If there is a problem with the shifter, we recommend hiring a mechanic to fix this for you because it is a complex system.
