Many people depend on the ease and convenience that an ice maker allows, as opposed to the tedious use of ice cube trays. But what if your ice maker stops working?? Check out these common problems and their simple solutions, and hopefully you can have your ice maker up and running in no time!
Remember to unplug your refrigerator and disconnect the water supply before doing any repairs, and call a professional if there is something you do not feel comfortable doing.
Not making ice at all:
Check the water supply line – This water line can easily clog if there is ice stuck in the line. If this is the case, unplug the fridge and defrost the line. While looking for ice, also check the line for kinks or sharp bends behind and beneath the refrigerator that could stop the water flow.
Check the bail – The metal wire bail above the ice maker should be in the down position. If it is locked in the up position, this stops the ice from being made. Simply push it back to the “on” position.
Ice not ejecting:
Check the control arm – The control arm can easily get bumped out of its proper position when things are being moved around. Check where it is, and move it into the down or “on” position if it is not already.
Check the electrical connection – Slide the refrigerator out from the wall and find the quick release plug on the back wall inside the freezer. Unplug the connection, and then reconnect it. Remove any remaining ice from the mold. Restore power to the refrigerator unit and lift the ice control arm to the off position. Lower the control arm back down (into the “on” position) and wait a few seconds for the solenoid to engage and fill the mold with water. If ice still does not eject following these steps, you likely will need to replace the motor or gearbox.
Ice cubes are too big or too small:
Check the supply line – Too small could indicate that there is a partial clog or kink in the line, or that it is in the beginning stages of freezing somewhere in the line.
Check the ice maker controls – If you pull off the ice maker cover (the foremost white plate on the maker assembly), you should see a plus (+) and minus (-) indicator, which is the adjustment for the amount of water going to the ice. Use a screwdriver to adjust toward the minus (for smaller cubes) or toward the plus (for larger ones), depending on which issue you are trying to resolve.
Your ice maker should now be ready and able to make you all the ice you need! If problems are still persisting, you may need to call a professional.
