Keep your garage refrigerator working all winter long with a garage refrigerator heater kit

Garage Refrigerator Heater KitWhen winter hits and the temperature drops, make sure the refrigerator in your garage keeps working by installing a Garage Refrigerator Heater Kit.

Your refrigerator only creates cold air when it needs to maintain a consistent temperature inside your refrigerator.  During the winter, when outside temperatures drop below 40 degrees Fahrenheit, your refrigerator senses this and stops producing the cold air that keeps your items cool and your freezer items frozen.

A garage refrigerator heater kit provides enough heat to trick the thermostat into running the compressor. More cold air is then produced keeping items in your freezer frozen and your food safe.

Made by Electrolux, this kit can be used in many top-mount (meaning freezer on top) refrigerator models made by Frigidaire and Kenmore. Installation instructions are included along with the part.

Purchase a Garage Refrigerator Kit at www.pcappliancerepair.com before temperatures drop.

How to clean your clothes dryer

If your laundry is still damp after it comes out of the dryer, or it takes your dryer a long time to dry your laundry  (more than 30-45 minutes) and the outside of your dryer is hot to the touch, these are all signs that you might have clogged duct work or venting and it’s time to clean your dryer.

Clothes dryers accounted for 92% of 16,800 home fires reported in 2010, according to a report by the National Fire Protection Association. These fires contributed to 51 deaths, 380 injuries and $236 million in direct property damage.

To clean out your clothes dryer, use a special lint brush to reach deep into the lint screen compartment of your clothes dryer where lint is trapped inside.

To clean out your clothes dryer, use a lint brush to reach deep into the lint screen compartment of your clothes dryer where lint is trapped inside. After unplugging your dryer, remove your lint screen and push the brush deep inside the lint shoot. Pull out the brush and either using a vacuum attachment or your hand to remove the lint stuck to the brush. It might be a good idea to wear a mask while cleaning due to  floating lint or dust particles.

Next, clear lint from your clothes dryer duct work using a Dryer Vent Duct Cleaning Brush. Remove the vent from the back of your dryer and stick the brush inside your vent tubing. Once the brush cannot move any further, gently pull it out to remove any lint clogging the vent.

Finally, after unplugging your dryer (if you have a gas dryer, turn off the gas) and doing some disassembly, use a Refrigerator and Crevice Cleaning Tool Vacuum Attachment to clean inside the dryer itself. The tool attaches to your vacuum cleaner and allows you to reach underneath the dryer drum and into all the crevices inside your dryer’s cabinet to remove dust and lint. It’s flat enough to fit underneath the dryer drum, saving you from disassembling more parts and removing the dryer drum. Plus, it can also be used to clean underneath other appliances as well.

Other additional tips from the U.S. Fire Administration:

  • Inspect the venting system behind the dryer to ensure it is not damaged or restricted.
  • Put a covering on outside wall dampers to keep out rain, snow and dirt.
  • Make sure the outdoor vent covering opens when the dryer is on.
  • Replace coiled-wire foil or plastic venting with rigid, non-ribbed metal duct.
  • Don’t use a clothes dryer without a lint filter or with a lint filter that is loose, damaged or clogged.

Stove knob covers prevent your kids (and your dog) from turning on your stove

Just recently, a fire was started in a New Jersey home when a dog turned on the stove, burning a laptop which was placed on top of the stove. This illustrates two points – one, don’t leave anything on top of your stove, even if it’s turned off and two, your dog can just as easily turn on your stove as your child.

In 2009, ranges and ovens were involved in an estimated 17,300 thermal burn injuries with children under the age of 5 making up 5,600, or 36%, of those injured according to The Electrical Safety Foundation International.

Pets can also be the cause of fires and nearly 1,000 home fires are started every year  by the homeowners’ pets, according to the National Fire Protection Association. To prevent fires, many safety organizations suggest installing stove knob guards or covers to keep your child and pet safe.StoveKnobCovers

These clear stove knob covers by Child Safe mount under the knob without adhesive. The clear hinged lid allows easy adult-access to the knob when needed. Snap the lid shut to prevent child access to stove knobs.

To install:

  • Remove the stove knob and position the cover over the post.
  • Replace the knob back on and close the base push-in tab together.
  • Close the cover and snap into base to secure.

The lid covers can easily be removed when they are no longer needed on your appliance.

Comes in a pack of four clear knob covers. Purchase online at www.pcappliancerepair.com.

The dog involved in the New Jersey fire, who was home alone, was rescued by firefighters and is doing fine. Depending on the make of the stove, the above stove knob covers possibly could have prevented this fire.

Other suggestions for child-proofing your kitchen

  • Keep the latch on your dishwasher locked at all times. For added security, add locking straps to your dishwasher.
  • Run the dishwasher only after the children have gone to bed.
  • Turn pot handles toward the wall and away from the edge of the stove where little hands might grab them.
  • Use the rear burners on your stove whenever possible.
  • Use the lock feature on your oven door even if the oven is not on. This prevents your child from using the door to climb on.
  • Never keep treats on top of appliances or near the stove. Such placement might tempt the child (or a dog) to climb on top of the appliance to reach them.

Appliances and homes designed for seniors and aging in place

As the baby boomers age and retire, they are not only customizing their homes, but also choosing appliances with features which will allow them to age in place while remaining safe in their homes.

Both homes and appliances are incorporating the aspects of universal design into their products. Universal design means designing products and spaces that are accessible to people with different levels of abilities.  Along with the increasing numbers of aging baby boomers, there is also a growing trend of multi-generational homes. According to the HuffingtonPost.com, “more than 51 million Americans  find themselves dealing with life in a multigenerational home, or a household with three or more generations living under one roof.”AppliancesforSeniors_aginginplace

A story in the Washington Post talks about one such couple designing their home so they can age in place; Tom and Susie McSweeny of Maryland, who  built their home with wide doorways to accommodate a wheelchair and a flat, no-step entryway. They also designed their kitchen to include plenty of room to allow for easy access to all food prep areas and appliances. Their laundry room is on the first floor, eliminating unnecessary steps to reach this area.

“You have to be realistic,” says Susie in the Washington Post story. “You don’t know what health issues you may develop as you get older, but you try to plan for it so that you can enjoy your later years.”

The AARP reports that most older Americans want to stay in their homes permanently and live independently. In order for this to happen, homes and appliances must be designed to be accessible and safe for those with future mobility, vision and health problems.
