A refrigerator ice maker that freezes up can be caused by a frozen ice maker fill tube, faulty water inlet valve, too low freezer temperature setting, or a water filter that needs replacing.
Warning! Before attempting to work on any appliance, make sure that all power (electricity) and utilities (water and gas) have been turned off and/or disconnected on the appliance. Read more
First, locate the water supply to your ice maker and turn off the water supply via the shut off valve. You may want to have a bucket and towels on hand for any extra remaining water in the water supply line.
Fill Tube and Water Supply Line Frozen
The fill tube and water supply line supplies water to your ice maker. The fill tube can be a separate part that connects to the water supply line and it enters from the back of your freezer and into your icemaker. You may need to remove your icemaker to see this tube and to check if it is frozen.
If the fill tube is frozen, you will need to thaw it out using hot water pored over the tube using a turkey baster, or else remove this part from your refrigerator and thaw it out in the sink. You can remove this part from behind your fridge by unscrewing a few screws and detaching the water supply line. Thaw in your sink and reattach.
Some methods suggest using a hairdryer to thaw out this part. Be careful when using this method as dripping water and electricity could lead to a possible electric shock. Also, exposure to long periods of heat could damage the fill tube part.
Replace the Water Filter
If you have a refrigerator water filter, check to see if it needs replacing or consider replacing it.
Reset the Freezer Temperature
Check the temperature setting on your freezer as it might be set too low. You may want to bump it up a degree or two.
Test the Water Inlet Valve
You may want to also test the water inlet valve. The water inlet valve controls the flow of water into the ice maker and is located in the rear of the refrigerator behind the back access panel. Sometimes this part can go bad and overfill the ice cube tray when it is not needed.
The water inlet valve also has a screen filter that can become clogged with sediment and minerals from hard water over time. Remove the water inlet vale from the refrigerator and use a flat head screw driver to remove the sediment screen from the part. Clean the filter screen using soap and warm water and replace. Reassemble all parts and test your ice maker.
Reblogged this on Mike's Heating & Cooling.
what is the perfect temperature for your freezer. I want to make sure that it is set to low. thank you
Hi Joseph, Your freezer should be set at 0° F (-18° C).
Very informative video, thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Air infiltration from the freezer compartment onto the filler tube is prevented , at least in my subzero, by black dum dum putty at the top of it where it enters the ceiling of the freezer. Water stays in the tube because of the vacuum in the tube . If the cold air from the freezer can reach the part of the tube that contains water it will freeze and you’ll have to take a hair dryer to thaw it. The dum dum putty prevents air infiltration from the freezer onto this vulnerable part of the water tube. Make sure the putty is tight to the ceiling of the freezer by pushing it back up to the ceiling to stop any air movement. If you know a dentist you can get some vinyl polysiloxane putty used for crown impressions and add a little more sealing at the ceiling and cover the part of the tube that can be reached from inside the freezer with it for a little more insulating effect. This was the fix that worked for me and I have been fighting this for 2 years.
Thanks for that tip, Mike!

Hi Virginia,
YouTube is a good source for video tutorials on how to troubleshoot your particular appliance. All you need is your make and model number of your appliance. Here’s where to look for your model number on your refrigerator. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CK8Y2hfYBro

I have a GE Profile Model PFSS5RKZASS. It will make a full bin of ice then the funnel where the water goes thru to the ice tray freezes. We took it out, let it thaw completely and put it back in. Again a full bin of ice then the water funnel on top of the ice maker freezes. When it trys to fill, the water goes all down the sides of the bin and out the shoot. What would make this happen?
Hi Jonnean,
Our above article has some general advice on things you can try to do to prevent the ice maker fill tube from freezing up over and over again. You can also try contacting GE with your complaint as they might have more specific advice regarding your appliance according to its model number. We tried to search on the GE website for your model number to see if they have any specific suggestions, but we did not find anything about the ice maker freezing up. They did have a general ice maker help video which may or may not help you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUXWZEHqzIs&list=PLX8_V2wHGuhnYADc0dzlEEcggLCDA5jmJ&index=30&t=0s
