Dryer won't spin or tumble – How to fix a dryer that will not turn

A clothes dryer that does not tumble or spin could be due to a broken belt, worn drum rollers, drum glide, or drum bearing or defective motor. Here’s how to tell which part is causing your dryer not to turn and how to fix it.

Broken Drive Belt

The dryer drive belt wraps around the dryer drum and the motor pulley. The motor rotates the belt and the belt turns the drum. If you hear the dryer motor running, but the drum is not moving, then this is a good indication that either the belt is broken and will need to be replaced.

The idler pulley assembly provides tension on the drum belt so it stays in place when the drum is filled with laundry. A loud squeaking, squealing or thumping noise that comes from the bottom of the dryer could indicate that idler pulley assembly is worn and needs to be replaced.

Worn Dryer Drum Support Rollers

Dryer Maintenance Kit for Whirlpool, Maytag, Kenmore and other dryers 4392067

A Dryer Maintenance Kit, like this one for many types of Whirlpool Dryers such as Maytag, Kenmore, Amana and Jenn Air, Part number 4392067, comes with both a belt, support rollers and idler wheel.

The dryer drum support rollers allow the dryer drum to turn smoothly. A dryer can have two to four support rollers. Over time, the rollers can wear down from use, causing a squealing, thumping or rumbling noise. For this repair, it’s best to replace the entire set of rollers, as they tend to wear out evenly over time.

Worn Drum Glides

Plastic drum glides or slides  support the dryer drum as it turns. Worn drum glides can restrict the smooth turning motion of the drum, causing a grinding, squealing or squeaking noise and straining the motor. Replace worn glides with new ones.

Some dryer models use a bearing which supports the dryer drum. It’s located at the rear of the dryer drum. If you have checked other parts and they seem ok, it could be that your bearing has gone bad and will need to be replaced.

Bad Dryer Motor

The dryer motor provides the power to turn the blower and dryer drum. If you cannot hear the motor humming, then this might indicate that the motor is faulty and needs to be replaced. You can also try removing the drum belt and spinning the drum by hand. Try spinning the blower wheel too. If you can move both parts freely by hand, this might also indicate a defective motor that needs replacing.
