Follow these tips to freshen up your home while you are stuck inside this winter.
Clean your carpets
Use the many hours you spend inside to clean your rugs. If you do not own a carpet cleaner or steam cleaning vacuum, most hardware and grocery stores have carpet cleaners for rent.
You can also make your own dry carpet cleaner at home using a number of items you probably already have in your kitchen pantry. This DIY dry carpet refresher recipe calls for baking soda, corn starch, corn meal, cloves and bay leaves. Combine and use a cheese shaker to sprinkle it all over your carpet and let it sit for a few hours to overnight. Vacuum as usual.
Add some plants
Some household plants can eliminate significant amounts of benzene, formaldehyde and trichloroethylene from the air. Research by NASA suggests adding at least one plant per 100 square feet of home or office space for efficient air cleaning. Indoor plants to consider include Sansevieria trifasciata (aka., snake plant), peace lily, ficus, fern or bamboo palm. See a list of the Top 10 Houseplant Air Cleaners for more suggestions.
Use or add a household air freshener to your rooms
Add an air freshener or use an air freshening aerosol spray that absorbs household odors without covering them. Smells Begone® makes both odor-removing gel beads and sprays. A single jar restores freshness 450 square feet for around three months. Use the spray to entrap odor molecules and leave behind a nice clean scent in a choice of fragrances like “Calming Rain,” or “Lavender Vanilla.”
